Final Project Interview: Gunel Gasanov

Nandi Barker
Art in NY

When my professor came up with the idea of the class interviewing an artist’s; at first I thought to myself “Wow Nandi you are a media and communication major this may be good practice for you”. Then I actually realized that I really don’t know any artist especially not knowing much about art. The only artist I’ve her about while growing up and hearing their names on television is Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh but, after taking Art in NY at Laguardia Community college I had a much broader mind set of different types of art and artist that I might can interview.
While looking for an artist I stumbled upon one. A sculpture student by the name of Rosa Tabar from LaGuardia College. Who had drive and passion in what she did which I adored. I than found out after emailing my professor shortly with that project  that we couldn’t interview a LaGuardia student, as she repeatedly stated in class while discussing for the final project. My search to interview an artist began and I was anxious and nervous at the same time.
I started to ask around some friends if they knew any artist that will bne interested in me interviewing them for my Final art assignment. I came across a good friend of mine by the name of Gunel Gasanova a third year general illustration student with an Azerbaijan background. She attends (FIT) Fashion Institute of Technology. While interviewing Ms. Gasanov said since she could talk she started crafting. She also mentioned now at age 21 she feels like she’s suppose to be partying the night away and hanging with friends but, because of her dedication and love for art she has cut off all her social activities because her true passion and dreams that she will to fulfill one day. Gunel also stated that in five to six years she sees herself as an freelance illustrator. I also asked her “ God forbid you do not make it as a freelance illustrator?. Her answer: “I’m pretty confident my dreams will come true”.
Below there are a few sketches of Gunel Gasanova work:

David Smith

Upon arrival at the Whitney Museum the staff was very welcoming also acknowledging that I was a student.

David Roland Smith was born on March 9, 1906 in Decatur, Indiana and moved to Paulding, Ohio in 1921.David first discovered his love for art when he realized that the college which he was attending at the time didn’t have any art courses which forced him to drop out of school. Which lead him to work at multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Smith has always had a eye for design which his sculptures reflect his love for Art While at the Whitney Museum a few of Smith’s pieces impress me but two sculptures that grabbed my attention which was the Blue Construction (1938), and the ZigIII (1961).
The painting of both sculptures were immaculate because Smith wasn’t painting on a regular cannabis he was painting a steel and to do that you have to have a true talent.
Even though I am not a Art major Smith sculptures has definitely influence me to have an eye for art.

"Bad'' Drawing

This of course is considered a major Art Resource because art has something to do with color an the display of these two colors "red" and "yellow"gives the true definition of Art Resource.

This is consider an non-art resource because its an clock and isn't consider art.

Deformation of a figure which i am displaying  a cracked deformed egg.

Fantastic Content I chose to draw my blackberry cell phone because of the value of it and the features and how stylish it is which why I consider it fantastic.

NYC

While working on my Paint still life project. I felt very motivated that we had to draw something that represents NYC. The first thought that came to mine was the World Trade Center. While commuting from Brooklyn to Manhattan and the train is crossing the Manhattan bridge visitors and also fellow New Yorkers rush to the windows to have a look at the view of the once know twin towers and the beautiful skyline. I am a New Yorker and proud of it. I also did this painting in honor of the 9/11 memorial. From our very first post in class of the memorial in the M building in LaGuardiang was very touching so I figure this is something they can also add to the collection.
